About FH Wetland Systems Ltd.

Féidhlim Harty Wetland Systems (FHWS) was established in 1996 to provide a design, consultancy and planting service for constructed wetlands and to increase public awareness of constructed wetlands for the treatment of a wide variety of wastewater types. Many other environmental services are now also offered, including Catchment Management, Educational Resources, Licence Applications, Stormwater Management and Filtration and Waste Management. Now ten years in business, FHWS continues to offer a professional yet personal service to home-owners, developers, industry and councils around the country.

Some Notable Projects to Date:

  • Construction and Planting of Wetland at Ballymaloe House, Co. Cork, which treats all the wastewater from the guest house. Also at the Ballymaloe constructed wetland FHWS carried out a twelve month monitoring programme in conjunction with the EPA Cleaner Production Pilot Demonstration Programme to assess the efficiency of the wetland at treating the wastewater, and to check the health of the Rooska stream, the receiving water body.
  • Design and planting of domestic scale wastewater treatment wetland for a house in Oranmore, Co. Galway featured on the Our House television series with Duncan Stewart. Also the design, construction and/or planting of other domestic systems around Ireland, north and south, including a system for a house in Innishannon, Co. Cork, featured on RTE's Ear to the Ground series.
  • Planting of Cork County Council System at Boherbue, which polishes the waste from the village's effluent treatment system, as featured on RTE's Nationwide series. Also design and/or planting of municipal constructed wetland systems in various counties for polishing septic tank and effluent treatment system discharge.
  • Stream improvement wetlands for silt and nutrient reduction as well as pool and riffle sequences for oxygenation in Cos. Cork and Wicklow. These systems are usually designed for encouraging wildlife or for improving the aesthetics of the stream.
  • Consultancy and design of constructed wetlands for flow buffering and stormwater filtration from housing estates and roads as well as industrial yard areas for filtering out speicifc target pollutants.
  • Wildlife gardening in domestic gardens and habitat management measures for a guest-house and golf course, in and around rivers, streams and water features. Planting of the designated pond and wetland areas for habitat enhancement within and adjacent to Special Areas of Conservation for large construction projects in Limerick and Cork.
  • "An Introduction to the West Cork Environment", an information pack designed for school, library and public use for raising awareness and pride in the local environment. This project was commissioned by West Cork Leader Co-op as part of their promotion of the region.
  • A list of FHWS wetlands and other constructed wetlands and reed beds is listed in Harty F and Otte ML (2003) Constructed wetlands for treatment of waste water. In: Otte ML (ed.) Wetlands of Ireland: Distribution, ecology, uses and economic value. UCD Press, Dublin.
