Friday 11th October 2019

Join sake expert Honami, head of marketing for KEIGETSU, for an extraordinary food paired event at Ballymaloe House in celebration of this Japanese staple and ahead of the Rugby World Cup 2019 and the Olympic Games 2020 being held in Japan. We are thrilled to be bringing a taste of Japan to East Cork.

Sake is a Japanese wine made from rice through fermentation and KEIGETSU produce an extraordinary and diverse range of delicious sakes. For 141 years since founding in 1877, KEIGETSU have manufactured high quality sake, provided with abundant water and clean air from mountains in nothern Kochi-prefecture (called “Tosa-Reihoku region”). Tosa-cho, where their brewery exists, is surrounded with a serene natural environment near the Sameura Lake which is called a water source in Shikoku. From this lake Yoshino river flows through Shikoku to the east. KEIGETSU sake is handmade in small batches using high-quality soft water from this region.

On this evening Honami will introduce the first of 5 sakes during a canapé reception and introduce guests to the process and histsory of sake making. How the 'polishing of rice' determines the different varieties and our head chef, Dervilla O'Flynn will be devising an especially paired menu to enhance the experience of the subsequent 4 sakes you will be tasting... who knew that sake can also be (1) sparkling (2) cold (3) sweet - Yuzusake... which is a citrus sake and (4) natural.. yes, sake too is turning to natural / biodynamic varieties.

There is so much to learn and taste, and the evening will be an exceptionally unique opportunity to experience this extraordinary traditional Japanese wine from the experts.  You'll be experts yourself if you are visiting Japan for upcoming sporting events, or you might get a taste for it, and be ordering some yourself, so that you can toast our competitiors with the host countries local liquor knowledgeably from your own home.

KEIGETSU sake is imported to Ireland by Irish wine company Liberty Wines

The evening will start at 6.30pm.  Booking in advance will be essential and places are limited.
